Mighty Aphrodite is a 1995 romantic comedy-drama film written and directed by Woody Allen. The film stars Allen himself as Lenny, a New York sportswriter, and Mira Sorvino as Linda Ash, a prostitute and porn star who is Max's birth mother. The film also features Helena Bonham Carter as Amanda, Lenny's wife.
As Lenny becomes increasingly obsessed with Linda Ash's intelligence, he hires a private investigator to track her down. When he finally meets her, he tries to persuade her to give up her life of prostitution and become a better mother to Max. However, Linda is not interested in changing her lifestyle and Lenny begins to realize that his attempts to reform her are futile.
The film features a Greek chorus, comprised of three singers, who comment on the action and provide insight into the characters' motivations. The chorus also provides a parallel to the story of Oedipus, with Lenny's efforts to find Max's mother drawing comparisons to Oedipus' quest to find his true identity.
Mighty Aphrodite was well-received by critics, earning Sorvino an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. The film's quirky humor and inventive storytelling continue to make it a favorite among Allen's fans.
