Merrily We Live is a 1938 screwball comedy film directed by Norman Z. McLeod and starring Constance Bennett, Brian Aherne, and Alan Mowbray. The film follows the Kilbourne family, led by the quirky and unconventional Emily Kilbourne, who hires down-on-their-luck men as maids, butlers, and chauffeurs.
One day, a charming tramp named Rawlins (played by Aherne) knocks on Emily Kilbourne's (played by Bennett) door and is quickly hired as their new chauffeur. Rawlins becomes a hit with the Kilbourne family, who are all charmed by his wit and personality. However, Geraldine (played by Ann Dvorak), the daughter of a rich socialite who is visiting the family, becomes romantically interested in Rawlins, much to the chagrin of her jealous fiancé.
As the film progresses, Rawlins' true identity is revealed, and the Kilbourne family is forced to choose whether to continue their relationship with him or to turn him over to the police. Merrily We Live is filled with comedic hijinks, mistaken identities, and hilarious misunderstandings, making it a beloved and enduring classic of the screwball comedy genre.
