After being discharged from the Marines due to his injuries, the protagonist, Marine Sergeant John Smith returns to Montana to attend therapy sessions at a VA hospital where he meets a gruff and reclusive Vietnam veteran named Joe. Struggling to come to terms with the loss of his leg and the trauma of combat, John is initially resistant to Joe's attempts to teach him fly fishing. However, as John learns the art of fly fishing, he discovers a sense of calm and purpose that he had thought was lost forever in the wake of his injuries.
As John begins to open up to Joe about his experiences in Afghanistan, they discover that they share a common bond as soldiers who have seen the horrors of war. Joe helps John to understand that the emotional wounds of combat can be just as debilitating as physical injuries, and that finding a sense of peace and purpose can be a crucial part of the healing process.
John starts to make progress in his recovery, both physically and emotionally, as he spends more time with Joe on the river. However, their newfound friendship is tested when Joe reveals that he is suffering from a terminal illness and has decided to end his life on his own terms.
As Joe prepares to say goodbye to the world, he shares one final fishing trip with John, passing on his knowledge and love of the sport. In doing so, Joe helps John to find a renewed sense of purpose and a way to move forward with his life, even as he carries the scars of war with him.
