Men in Black II is a 2002 American science fiction action comedy film directed by Barry Sonnenfeld and starring Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith. The film is the sequel to the 1997 film Men in Black and was followed by Men in Black III in 2012.
The film picks up five years after the events of the first film when a new threat emerges in the form of a shapeshifting alien named Serleena, who comes to Earth to find a power source hidden in the Light of Zartha. The Light of Zartha is an object that Kay, one of the original Men in Black agents, had hidden on Earth in the form of a necklace worn by a young woman named Laura Vasquez.
In order to stop Serleena and save the Earth, the current Men in Black agent Jay must find Kay, who has retired and had his memories of his time with the agency erased. With the help of a worm-like alien named Frank, Jay convinces Kay to rejoin the MIB and help save the planet.
The film features several new characters, including Michael Jackson as an undercover MIB agent, and Lara Flynn Boyle as the villainous Serleena. The film also includes several callbacks to the first film, including appearances by Frank the Pug and the Worm Guys.
Despite receiving mixed reviews from critics, Men in Black II was a commercial success, earning over $441 million at the box office. The film's success led to the development of a third film, which was released ten years later.
