Memories of My Father

Drama,History  Colombia

Memories of My Father is based on a true story and centers around the life of renowned Colombian medic and human rights activist, Hector Abad Gómez. The film is set in the 1970s during a tumultuous time in Medellin, when drug cartels and political violence were rampant.

The story follows Dr. Abad Gómez, a highly respected physician and professor, who is deeply concerned about the health and wellbeing of the less fortunate in Medellin. He works tirelessly to improve public health programs and educate people about the importance of preventative medicine. However, his efforts to help the poor are met with resistance from the city's authorities, who see him as a threat to their power.

Meanwhile, Dr. Abad Gómez is also dealing with personal tragedies in his family. His wife struggles with mental illness, and his eldest daughter, also named Héctor, is politically involved in left-wing causes. The family faces threats and violence from right-wing paramilitary groups who seek to silence any dissenting voices.

The film is narrated from the perspective of Héctor's youngest daughter, also named Abad Gómez. She recalls her father's legacy as a compassionate doctor and brave activist, and reflects on the impact his life and death had on her own journey.

Memories of My Father is a moving tribute to a remarkable man who dedicated his life to improving the living conditions of the poor in Medellin, and to fighting for human rights and justice in Colombia. The film also explores the complexities of family relationships, political violence, and the power of activism to effect change.
