The story follows the life of Chiyo, a young girl from a fishing village, who is sold to a geisha house in Kyoto after her mother falls ill and her father can no longer afford to feed the family. Chiyo is separated from her sister and forced to work as a servant, where she meets a kind older geisha named Mameha, who takes her under her wing and trains her in the arts of a geisha.
As Chiyo grows up and becomes an accomplished geisha named Sayuri, she finds herself caught in a love triangle between two wealthy men: the kind-hearted businessman, the Chairman, and the cruel and powerful businessman, Nobu. As she navigates the complexities of her relationships with these men, Sayuri must also face the impending threat of World War II and its impact on the geisha community.
Throughout the film, the audience is introduced to the intricate world of geishas, including their training in traditional arts such as dance and music, their elaborate dress and makeup, and the hierarchies and rivalries within the geisha community.
Memoirs of a Geisha was based on the 1997 novel of the same name by Arthur Golden and was directed by Rob Marshall. The film received mixed reviews from critics but was a commercial success, grossing over $162 million worldwide. It won three Academy Awards, including Best Cinematography, Best Art Direction, and Best Costume Design.
