Ann Mitchell is a newspaper reporter who is fired from her job because of her strong opinions. As a parting shot, she writes a fake letter from a "John Doe," who threatens to commit suicide on Christmas Eve in protest of all the social ills in the world. The letter becomes a sensation and the paper is forced to rehire her. To keep the story going, Ann and her bosses hire a man named John Willoughby to impersonate the mysterious "Doe." As John Doe, Willoughby gains a following of supporters who identify with his message of hope and change. However, the newspaper owners have other plans and want to use John Doe to promote their own political agenda, much to the dismay of Ann and Willoughby. In the end, John Doe's message of hope and unity wins out over the cynical interests of the media magnates.
