Lillian Cooper's world is shattered when she discovers that her 25-year-old son, Max, has died of an apparent drug overdose. Initially, the investigating officer on the case, Detective Peterson, is sympathetic to Lillian’s pain but ultimately rules that Max's death was an accidental overdose. This conclusion leaves Lillian reeling with confusion and grief.

Determined to uncover the truth about her son's death, Lillian begins her own investigation. She discovers that Max had become involved with a group of drug dealers, including a charismatic young man known only as "Ace." Hoping to learn more about Max's activities before his death, Lillian seeks out Ace and convinces him to work with her to dive deeper into what really happened to her son.

As the unlikely pair begins to work together, they uncover a tangled web of deception and violence that touches everyone in Max's life. Lillian also begins to experience vivid hallucinations, where the iconic characters she's played on stage appear to her as a kind of inner voice urging her to seek vengeance for Max's death.

As her investigation reaches its conclusion, Lillian finds herself torn between the desire for justice and the knowledge that her actions could lead to even more violence. In the end, she must decide whether to follow her heart or her head as she seeks to avenge her son's death and bring those responsible to justice.
