The film stars Jim Carrey as Charlie Baileygates, a Rhode Island state trooper suffering from a severe case of dissociative identity disorder (DID). His alternate personality, Hank, is a foul-mouthed, violent, and aggressive personality who appears whenever Charlie becomes stressed or threatened.
When Charlie is assigned to escort a woman named Irene (played by Renée Zellweger) back to New York to face criminal charges, he falls in love with her. However, Hank also falls in love with Irene, and the two personalities constantly clash over her affections.
As they make their way to New York, Charlie and Irene are pursued by corrupt police officers who are also after Irene for her involvement in a money laundering scheme. Meanwhile, Hank's aggressive behavior begins to put Charlie and Irene in danger.
Ultimately, Charlie must find a way to control Hank and confront his past traumas in order to win Irene's heart and protect her from harm. The film features a mix of slapstick comedy and heartfelt moments as Charlie and Hank struggle to reconcile their personalities and find their place in the world.
