Allie is excited to attend her family's celebration of the Hungry Ghost Festival, but she's also anxious about keeping her relationship with her girlfriend a secret. She's not sure how her traditional Chinese American family will react if they find out about her sexuality.
During the celebration, Allie spots an old photograph of a family member she's never heard of before - Maxine. When she asks her mother about Maxine, she's met with an uncomfortable silence. Allie's curiosity is piqued, and she becomes determined to learn more about this mysterious relative.
As the night wears on, Allie starts to notice strange things happening around the house. Doors suddenly slam shut, objects seem to move on their own, and shadows appear out of nowhere. Eventually, Allie comes face to face with the ghostly figure of Maxine.
At first, Allie is scared and unsure of what to do. But as she begins to talk to Maxine, she realizes that they have a lot in common. Maxine was gay during a time when it was even more difficult to be out and proud than it is today. As they talk, Maxine shares her own struggles with belonging and identity, and Allie begins to see her own experiences in a new light.
Together, Allie and Maxine navigate the complexities of their identities and family histories. Allie learns to be true to herself, while also respecting her family's traditions and culture. Maxine helps Allie to see that she isn't alone in her struggles, and that it's possible to honor the past while also creating a new future. Along the way, they develop a deep and meaningful connection that transcends time and space.
