In Max Dugan Returns, Nora McPhee (played by Marsha Mason) is struggling to make ends meet as a single mother and English teacher. Her life is turned upside down when her long-lost father, Max Dugan (played by Jason Robards), suddenly shows up on her doorstep.
Max is a charming and eccentric con artist who left Nora and her mother when she was a child. He has returned to make amends for his past mistakes and wants to reconnect with his daughter before his time runs out. Max brings with him a suitcase full of money and begins showering Nora and her teenage son, Michael (played by Matthew Broderick), with gifts and attention.
Nora is initially suspicious of Max's motives and struggles to reconcile her feelings about her father. Meanwhile, Michael is thrilled to have his grandfather in his life and becomes caught up in Max's schemes.
