Maverick, played by Mel Gibson, is a card player and con artist in the Old West who decides to compete in a high-stakes poker game for a $500,000 prize. However, he needs an additional $3,000 to enter the game. Maverick tries to win some money by playing with various players but only manages to break even. He also tries to collect debts owed to him, but his attempts are unsuccessful.
In the meantime, Maverick meets Annabelle Bransford, played by Jodie Foster, who is also a professional gambler. She tries to swindle Maverick, but he catches on and rescues her from a group of bandits. They team up and embark on a journey together to reach the poker game in time.
Along the way, they encounter various obstacles and adventures, including being pursued by a group of thieves and being caught in a riverbank robbery. Maverick and Annabelle eventually make it to the game, where they face off against various skilled players, including the infamous Angel, played by Alfred Molina.
The tense game comes down to a final showdown between Maverick, Angel, and a surprise player. Maverick's quick wit and gambling skills prove to be a match for his opponents, and he emerges as the winner.
In the end, Maverick and Annabelle part ways with newfound respect for each other's gambling abilities and the possibility of a future partnership. The film ends with Maverick riding off into the sunset with a newfound sense of confidence and accomplishment.
