"Mata Hari" is a 1985 film starring Sylvia Kristel in the title role. It tells the story of Margaretha Geertruida "Margreet" MacLeod, better known by her stage name Mata Hari, who becomes a spy for German intelligence in 1916.
Mata Hari, a Dutch national who has become a popular exotic dancer in Paris, is recruited by the German military attaché to spy on the French. At first, Mata Hari refuses, but after the French authorities refuse to grant her custody of her young daughter, she agrees to become a double agent.
Using her contacts in high society, Mata Hari begins passing information on to the Germans, while also cultivating relationships with French and British officers. She becomes particularly close to a young British pilot, Captain William Somerset, whom she falls in love with.
As the war goes on, Mata Hari's deceptions catch up with her. She is arrested by French authorities and charged with espionage. In a trial that is widely regarded as a miscarriage of justice, she is found guilty and sentenced to death.
The film follows Mata Hari's rise and fall, through flashbacks and interviews with her lawyer and fellow prisoners. It explores the themes of power, seduction, and betrayal, and features lavish costumes and music that evoke the glamour and decadence of pre-war Europe.
