Breaking the Chains of Prejudice

Drama  South Africa

The movie Master Harold... and the Boys is based on Athol Fugard's play "Master Harold" and the Boys. The story is set in 1950s apartheid South Africa. The main character, Hally, is a white teenager who is struggling with his identity and the racist ideology of his father. Hally's only refuge is his friendship with Sam and Willie, two black waiters at his father's tea room.

The movie explores the themes of racism, prejudice, and inequality that were prevalent in South Africa during apartheid. Hally is introduced to Sam's positive outlook on life and how he deals with discrimination. Sam teaches Hally the importance of forgiveness and overcoming anger.

The film also portrays the complexities of the relationship between Hally and Sam. Despite their friendship, their different social backgrounds create a divide between them. Hally's father is racist and belittles Sam constantly, which puts Hally in a difficult position. He is torn between his loyalty to his father and his admiration for Sam.

The climax of the movie comes when Hally hears about his father's impending return and, for the first time, takes his father's side against Sam. He resorts to using racist slurs to hurt Sam and get back at his father. The hurtful words not only sever Hally's relationship with Sam but also break Sam's heart.

The movie ends on a poignant note as Hally realizes his mistake and tries to make amends with Sam. He acknowledges the wrongness of his actions and wishes that they could go back to their friendship. However, the damage has been done, and the film leaves the audience with a sense of sadness and loss.
