M*A*S*H is a 1970 black comedy film directed by Robert Altman and based on the novel of the same name by Richard Hooker. Set during the Korean War, the film portrays the staff members of the 4077th Mobile Army Surgical Hospital (MASH) who use humor and hijinks to cope with the stress and trauma of war.
The central characters of the film are the irreverent surgeons Captain Hawkeye Pierce (played by Donald Sutherland) and Captain Trapper John McIntyre (played by Elliot Gould), who frequently engage in pranks and sabotage to undermine the military bureaucracy and regulations. M*A*S*H was a critical and commercial success, earning the Palme d'Or at the 1970 Cannes Film Festival and grossing over $81 million worldwide. It was also adapted into a hugely popular TV series that ran for 11 seasons from 1972 to 1983, becoming an iconic part of American popular culture.
