Mary is a lonely and misunderstood child who thinks she might be "different" from other kids. One day, she writes a letter to a random person in New York, and it ends up in the hands of Max, a middle-aged man with Asperger's syndrome who is also dealing with his own loneliness and struggles.
Max and Mary's friendship grows over the years through letters, in which they share their innermost thoughts, feelings, and experiences. Even though they live on opposite sides of the world, they become close confidantes and allies who support each other through life's challenges.
As Mary grows up and faces various obstacles, including her parents' divorce and struggles with mental health, Max becomes a constant presence in her life, offering words of wisdom and understanding that nobody else seems to be able to provide.
Despite their close bond, Max and Mary never meet in person until much later, when Mary takes a trip to New York to finally meet her pen pal. The meeting doesn't go exactly as planned, but ultimately, they both come to realize the true value of their friendship and the impact it has had on their lives.
