Marvin's Room

Drama  United States of America

Marvin's Room is a 1996 drama film directed by Jerry Zaks and based on the play of the same name by Scott McPherson. The film stars Meryl Streep, Diane Keaton, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Robert De Niro.

The story revolves around two sisters, Bessie (Streep) and Lee (Keaton), who have been estranged for 20 years due to Lee's selfishness and neglect of their family. Bessie has been caring for their bedridden father Marvin (Hume Cronyn) for many years, but when she is diagnosed with leukemia, she reaches out to her sister for help.

Lee reluctantly arrives with her two sons, one of whom is a troubled teenager named Hank (DiCaprio), who has been institutionalized for setting their mother's house on fire. Hank initially resents his aunt and cousin, but as he gets to know them, he begins to open up and form a bond with Bessie.

As Bessie's condition deteriorates, Lee reveals that she and her sons have been tested as bone marrow donors, and Hank is a match. However, he refuses to donate unless Bessie agrees to let him see his father, who has been institutionalized in the same mental hospital as Hank.

The film explores themes of family, forgiveness, and mortality, as the characters confront the various challenges that come with caring for a loved one who is dying. Despite the strained relationships and personal demons they must confront, the characters ultimately come together to support each other and find peace.
