Benny and Claire are struggling to make ends meet and are desperate for a big score. They stumble upon a discarded Chitauri gun, one of the alien weapons used in the Battle of New York from the first Avengers movie. Not knowing what it is or its value, they decide to use it to rob banks and get rich quick.
Their crime spree gains the attention of S.H.I.E.L.D., who send agents Sitwell and Blake to track down the rogue couple and retrieve the weapon. However, Benny and Claire turn out to be resourceful and able to outsmart the agents on several occasions.
As the agents close in on their location, Benny and Claire finally realize the danger they are in. They learn about the existence of S.H.I.E.L.D. and the Avengers and the potential repercussions of possessing a deadly alien weapon. They decide to take a stand and fight back against the agents, using the Chitauri gun to defend themselves.
In the end, Sitwell and Blake are able to retrieve the weapon, but Benny and Claire are given a second chance by S.H.I.E.L.D. They are offered jobs and the opportunity to start a new life, as long as they agree to help the agency track down other alien artifacts that became scattered across the world after the Battle of New York.
The Marvel One-Shot: Item 47 is a short film included on the Blu-ray release of The Avengers and serves as a fun and entertaining side story set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
