David Gordon (John Cusack), a science fiction author and recent widower, decides to adopt a six-year-old boy named Dennis (Bobby Coleman) who claims to be from Mars. Despite skepticism from his friends and family, David becomes increasingly attached to Dennis and becomes determined to help him overcome his social rejection and adjust to life on Earth.
Dennis expresses strange behavior, including wearing a large belt filled with batteries on his waist, refusing to eat anything except Lucky Charms, and hiding in boxes. David's attempts to connect with Dennis through science fiction stories and games offer a glimpse into the boy's imagination, but also threaten to push Dennis further away from reality.
David grows frustrated when he discovers that Dennis has been hoarding junk from the garbage, believing that they are communication devices from his home planet. This inspires David to write a book about Dennis and his Martian experiences, despite the potential backlash from the literary community.
