Mars Attacks! is a 1996 American sci-fi comedy film directed by Tim Burton and starring a large ensemble cast including Jack Nicholson, Glenn Close, Pierce Brosnan, Danny DeVito, Annette Bening, and Natalie Portman. Based on the trading card series of the same name, the film is an affectionate parody of B-movie science fiction films from the 1950s and 1960s.
In the film, a fleet of UFOs from Mars arrives on Earth, and their leader demands to meet with the President of the United States. However, when the President (played by Nicholson) initially greets the Martians with a message of peace, the aliens quickly reveal themselves to be hostile and begin a violent invasion of Earth. The film follows a diverse group of characters as they attempt to survive the Martian attack and save the planet from destruction.
The film's humor is largely derived from its intentionally cheesy special effects and over-the-top performances, as well as its satirical take on Cold War-era politics and American pop culture. Mars Attacks! received mixed reviews upon its release, with some critics applauding it as a clever pastiche of classic sci-fi tropes, while others criticized its juvenile humor and lack of coherent storytelling.
