Major Foster, played by Gene Hackman, is a seasoned veteran in the French Foreign Legion. He is tasked with training a group of new recruits to join the legion and is sent to a remote outpost in French Morocco. However, upon his arrival, he is informed that he must lead his platoon to protect an archaeological excavation site from being destroyed by El Krim, a powerful Rifian leader who aims to unite all the local tribes to fight against the colonial government.
As Foster and his platoon march through the desert, they encounter resistance from the local tribes who are loyal to El Krim. Along the way, Foster meets an American woman named Simone, played by Terence Hill, who is an archaeologist working at the excavation site. Foster and Simone form a romantic relationship as they both try to survive in the hostile environment.
Despite facing numerous challenges and setbacks, including a deadly ambush by El Krim's forces, Foster and his platoon continue to push forward towards their objective. Eventually, they arrive at the excavation site to find that El Krim has surrounded it with his army.
In a final showdown, Foster leads his platoon in a fierce battle against El Krim's warriors. The fighting is intense, but Foster's experience in combat proves to be invaluable as he uses his tactical prowess to outmaneuver his opponents. The battle ends with Foster emerging victorious, but not without sustaining heavy casualties.
In the end, the archaeologists are able to complete their work and leave the site unscathed. Foster and Simone share a final moment of tenderness before he departs on his next mission with the French Foreign Legion.
