In Marathon Man, the graduate student is named Babe Levy (played by Dustin Hoffman), and his brother, Doc Levy (played by Roy Scheider), is a government agent who works for the Division. Doc is assassinated by a former Nazi war criminal named Szell (played by Laurence Olivier), who believes Doc is in possession of a cache of diamonds that Szell stole during the war. Babe becomes embroiled in the plot when he is pursued by Szell and his henchmen, who believe he knows where the diamonds are hidden. Babe also becomes romantically involved with a woman named Elsa (played by Marthe Keller) who may be involved in the conspiracy. The movie climaxes in a tense confrontation between Babe and Szell, during which Babe discovers the truth about his brother's identity and implications of the conspiracy. The film's tagline, "Is it safe?", has become widely recognized in popular culture.
