Mammoth is a 2009 drama film directed by Lukas Moodysson. The film follows the lives of three interconnected families in different parts of the world. The first family is that of Leo, a successful American businessman, his wife Ellen, and their young daughter, Jackie. Leo is in Thailand on a business trip when he decides to take a break and reevaluate his life. He forms a connection with a young woman named Cookie, and they spend a few days together that leave a lasting impact on Leo.
Back in New York, Ellen is struggling to connect with her daughter, who is becoming increasingly distant. Ellen is also growing increasingly uncomfortable with their live-in Filipino maid, Gloria, who has become a surrogate mother to Jackie. As Ellen tries to assert her authority over her daughter and the household, Gloria begins to feel alienated and homesick.
Meanwhile, in the Philippines, Gloria's family is struggling to make ends meet without her. Her husband, Ernesto, works long hours as a fisherman, while their two sons, Salvador and Manuel, attend school and help out around the house. When Gloria's letters home stop arriving, her family starts to worry and wonder if she is okay.
As the lives of these three families unfold, they each must confront their own challenges and make difficult choices. Mammoth explores themes of globalization, family, and the interconnectedness of our lives and communities across borders.
