Mamma Mia! is a romantic comedy musical film adapted from the 1999 West End/Broadway musical of the same name. It was directed by Phyllida Lloyd and written by Catherine Johnson. The movie stars Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Stellan Skarsgård, Julie Walters, and Amanda Seyfried in lead roles.

The protagonist, Donna Sheridan (played by Meryl Streep), is an independent single mother and owner of the Villa Donna, a small hotel on the Greek island of Kalokairi. Her daughter, Sophie (played by Amanda Seyfried), is about to get married to her fiancé Sky (played by Dominic Cooper).

Sophie longs to know who her father is, but Donna has never revealed his identity to her. When Sophie finds her mother's diary, she discovers the entries about three men who could potentially be her father. Sophie invites all three men to her wedding without her mother's knowledge, in the hopes of figuring out which one is her biological father.

The three men are Sam Carmichael (played by Pierce Brosnan), a wealthy architect; Harry Bright (played by Colin Firth), a British banker; and Bill Anderson (played by Stellan Skarsgård), a Swedish sailor. When all three men arrive on the island, chaos ensues as Donna tries to hide their presence from her current partner, the island's jovial taverna owner, Bill Austin (played by Niall Buggy).

As the wedding approaches, Donna tries to come to terms with her past and her feelings for her ex-boyfriends, while Sophie tries to unravel the mystery of who her father really is. The movie culminates in a joyous wedding, with all the characters singing and dancing to the classic hits of the Swedish pop group ABBA, whose songs are the basis of the movie's soundtrack.
