Drama,History  United States of America

Malcolm X is a 1992 American epic biographical drama film directed by Spike Lee. The film is based on The Autobiography of Malcolm X as told to Alex Haley. The film follows the life of controversial political activist and civil rights leader Malcolm X, from his early days as a street hustler in Harlem, his conversion to Islam while in prison, his rise in the Nation of Islam, his split with the organization and eventual assassination in 1965.

The film stars Denzel Washington in the title role, alongside Angela Bassett, Albert Hall, Al Freeman Jr., and Delroy Lindo. It was well received by both critics and audiences, earning Washington an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor.

The film portrays Malcolm X's early life as a hustler in Harlem, where he interacted with notable figures such as Sammy Davis Jr. and Adam Clayton Powell Jr. He eventually finds himself in prison, where he is introduced to the teachings of the Nation of Islam by fellow inmate Baines. After his release, Malcolm becomes a prominent member of the Nation of Islam, preaching their message of black separatism and self-determination.

However, Malcolm's relationship with the Nation of Islam becomes strained when he publicly criticizes the group's leader, Elijah Muhammad, over allegations of his extramarital affairs. Malcolm ultimately leaves the Nation of Islam and forms his own organization, the Organization of Afro-American Unity.

The film culminates with Malcolm's assassination at the Audubon Ballroom in Harlem, as he is giving a speech. The final scene shows a montage of various civil rights movements and figures, with a voice-over of Malcolm's famous speech "The Ballot or the Bullet."

Malcolm X is celebrated as a powerful and inspiring figure in the fight for black liberation and civil rights. The film is considered a landmark in cinematic depictions of the African American experience and has been praised for its in-depth exploration of Malcolm X's life and legacy.
