The story centers around Palmer Woodrow, a lazy and wealthy preppie who hires Eddie Keaton, a street-smart kid, to attend classes for him at Hoover Academy, a prestigious boarding school. Palmer wants to spend his time partying in Europe without the burden of his studies, and he sees Eddie as the perfect person to take his place.

Eddie initially agrees to the deal since he needs money to pay off his gambling debts, but he soon realizes that he enjoys the academic challenge of attending Hoover Academy. He also falls in love with Tracey, a preppie girl who is initially skeptical of him but eventually warms up to him.

However, their budding romance is threatened by Biff, the school bully who is also interested in Tracey. As Eddie tries to navigate his new life at Hoover Academy, he also has to deal with his bookie from the old neighborhood, Dice, who comes to collect on his gambling debts.

Things start to unravel when Palmer returns from Europe earlier than expected, and Eddie has to pretend to be him in front of his classmates and teachers. The situation becomes even more complicated when Eddie begins to question whose side he is really on.
