Whispers on the Brink of War

Drama  United Kingdom

Making Noise Quietly is a British drama film, released in 2019. It is directed by Dominic Dromgoole and is based on the play of the same name by Robert Holman. The film consists of three interconnected stories, all taking place on the fringes of war.

In the first story, set during World War II, a conscientious objector named Oliver (Matthew Tennyson) meets a roaming artist named Eric (Luke Thompson) on the cliffs of Dover. Despite their political differences, the two men forge a bond as they witness the unfolding of the war across the English Channel.

The second story takes place in the aftermath of the Falklands War. A mother named Helen (Barbara Marten) is visited by her son's estranged lover named Frank (Geoffrey Streatfeild), who is searching for closure after her son's death. As they reminisce about her son, Helen confronts her bitterness and struggles to reconcile her love for her child with her anger at his decision to go to war.

The final story is set in the present day, in the Black Forest of Germany. An ageing Holocaust survivor named Helene (Trystan Gravelle) is on a pilgrimage to bring peace to a disturbed young boy named Jason (Orton O'Brien) and his equally wild stepfather (Peter Hamilton Dyer). As Helene shares her own experiences of trauma and loss, she helps the two men find a way to move forward and heal their own wounds.

Overall, Making Noise Quietly is a poignant and thought-provoking film that explores themes of war, loss, and human connection. Through its three interconnected stories, it offers a nuanced and compassionate look at the impact of violence on individuals and communities, and the ways in which we can find hope and healing in the face of adversity.
