Make Mine Music was released in 1946 by Walt Disney Productions as the eighth animated feature film. Unlike previous Disney films, Make Mine Music is a collection of musical shorts instead of a single narrative. The film features various musical styles, including swing, classical, and folk. Each of the nine segments is introduced by the one and only Benny Goodman and his orchestra.
The most famous segment from the film is "Peter and the Wolf," the retelling of Sergei Prokofiev's composition, which tells the story of a young boy who encounters a dangerous wolf in the forest. The segment is narrated by actor and voice artist Sterling Holloway, best known as the voice of Winnie the Pooh.
Another memorable segment is "Casey at the Bat," based on the poem of the same name by Ernest Thayer. The segment tells the story of a cocky baseball player named Casey who fails miserably in the final inning of a game.
Other segments in the film include "The Martins and the Coys," a musical feud between two mountain families; "The Whale Who Wanted to Sing at the Met," in which a lonely whale dreams of becoming an opera singer; and "Johnnie Fedora and Alice Bluebonnet," a romantic story about two hats who fall in love in a department store.
Make Mine Music received mixed reviews upon its release but has since gained a cult following for its unique concept and memorable segments. It is still considered a beloved classic amongst animation fans.
