The lead character, Bill Manucci (played by James Belushi), is a former jewel thief who works as a jeweler and is struggling financially. He gets an opportunity for a big score when he learns about a delivery of $12.5 million in diamonds. He enlists the help of his girlfriend, Deb (Vanessa Angel), and a friend, Bobby (Timothy Dalton), to pull off the heist. However, things go awry when they are ambushed by a rival gang and end up stealing both the diamonds and the gang's cash.
As they go on the run, Bill devises a plan to hide the money at a crystal meth factory run by some acquaintances. However, when the gangsters catch up to them, they discover that the factory is also a trap - a setup by the drug dealers to eliminate their enemies.
A shootout ensues, with both groups going after Bill and his crew. The situation is further complicated when an unscrupulous cop, Detective Devon (Michael Beach), who has been pursuing them from the beginning, shows up and joins in the fray. It turns out that Devon has been having an affair with Deb and is planning to take the money for himself.
As the bullets fly and the body count rises, Bill realizes that he will have to outsmart both the gangsters and the cop if he wants to come out alive and keep the money. In the end, he manages to outmaneuver them all and escape with the loot, leaving behind a trail of destruction.
