When Marty the zebra escapes from the Central Park Zoo, his friends Alex, Melman, and Gloria set out to find him. Along the way, they end up stranded on the island of Madagascar, where they encounter a group of lemurs led by King Julien XIII. Alex, who is used to being the king of his own domain, struggles to adapt to life in the wild, while Marty enjoys his newfound freedom.
As they try to find a way back to New York, the group faces various challenges, including hunger, predators, and Alex's growing hunger for meat. The penguins, who also escaped from the zoo, help them build a plane they hope will take them home.
Meanwhile, back in New York, the zookeepers realize the animals are missing and set out to find them. They eventually track them down to Madagascar, where they discover that Alex has reverted to his primal instincts and now sees his friends as potential prey.
In the end, Alex reconciles with his friends and decides to stay on the island with them, while the penguins, who have become celebrities in their own right, fly back to New York. The film ends with the lemurs and other animals throwing a party to celebrate their new visitors.
