Comedy  Brazil

Macunaíma is a Brazilian fantasy-comedy film released in 1969, directed by Joaquim Pedro de Andrade. The film is based on the novel of the same name by Mário de Andrade, one of the most influential modernist writers in Brazil.

The film tells the story of Macunaíma, a mythical hero from Brazilian folklore who is born fully grown in the jungle as a black man. However, he later transforms into a white man after eating a magical herb. He then sets out on an adventure-filled journey to the city of São Paulo, where he tries to adapt to city life and falls in love with a revolutionary named Ci.

Macunaíma becomes a dandy, dressing in fancy clothes and partying with his new friends. He also comes into conflict with a ruthless industrialist named Venceslau Pietro Pietra, whom he robs, leading to a chase through the city.

After Ci's accidental death in a bombing, Macunaíma returns to his village, where he is confronted with the reality that his newly acquired knowledge and possessions are of little use in the jungle. He tries to reconnect with his roots, but ultimately fails, and the film ends with him disappearing into the jungle.

Macunaíma is known for its surrealistic and irreverent style, mixing elements of Brazilian folklore, modernist literature, and pop culture. The film was a critical success and became a cult classic in Brazil, influencing subsequent generations of filmmakers.
