Ma Rainey's Black Bottom is a drama film based on the play by August Wilson. It revolves around Ma Rainey, an African American blues singer, as she and her band members gather at a Chicago recording studio in 1927 to record new tracks. Set against the backdrop of racism and sexism, tensions rise between Ma Rainey and her band members, particularly her ambitious trumpeter Levee, who clashes with the band leader and seeks to break away and form his own band. As the day progresses, the recording session becomes increasingly fraught with power struggles and conflicting opinions, culminating in a tragic and explosive finale. The film stars Viola Davis as Ma Rainey and the late Chadwick Boseman as Levee, in one of his final roles.
