In Lucky Them, Ellie Klug is struggling to keep up with the changing world of rock journalism. She's been with her magazine for years, but her editor is losing patience with her lack of enthusiasm and dedication to her job. To make matters worse, Ellie's personal life is a mess. She's just broken up with her latest boyfriend and doesn't seem to know what she wants in life.
When Ellie's editor assigns her to write a piece on Matt Smith, a legendary musician who disappeared years ago, Ellie jumps at the chance. Matt was also Ellie's ex-boyfriend, but she's never been able to shake him from her mind. Ellie sets out on a quest to find out what happened to Matt, hoping that it will help her move on from him once and for all.
Ellie teams up with Charlie, an eccentric amateur filmmaker who is more interested in capturing the essence of Ellie's journey than finding Matt. They travel across the country, interviewing anyone who knew Matt or might have information about his disappearance. Along the way, Ellie confronts her own issues and learns more about herself than she ever expected.
Lucky Them is a poignant exploration of love, loss, and the power of music to bring people together. It's a road movie that takes its time to dig deep into the characters' feelings, but it's never boring. The film is anchored by a strong performance from Toni Collette, who plays Ellie with equal parts vulnerability and wit. The supporting cast, including Thomas Haden Church as Charlie and Oliver Platt as Ellie's editor, is also excellent.
