Flight of Frustration: A Traveler's Nightmare

Comedy  France

Low Cost is a French comedy film directed by Maurice Barthélémy and released in 2011. The movie follows the story of a group of passengers on a low-cost flight from Djerba to Beauvais, which gets delayed for eight hours due to a technical fault in the plane's air-conditioning system. The passengers include a young engaged couple, an elderly man and his mentally-challenged son, a drug dealer, a businessman, a young woman on vacation with her friends, and a pilot who has lost his license.

As the hours pass, the passengers become increasingly frustrated and bored, and they start to find ways to pass the time. They drink, dance, socialize, and play games, but their spirits gradually wane as they realize that they might not get home that day. Eventually, the passengers start to turn on each other, with tensions rising and arguments breaking out.

Toward the end of the day, the passengers are offered a solution by the airline - they can fly back to Paris on a cargo plane, but they have to pay extra for the privilege. Desperate to get home, the passengers agree, and they board the cargo plane, which turns out to be an old military aircraft, and one that is not fit for passenger transport. The flight is bumpy, noisy, and uncomfortable, but the passengers are grateful just to be on their way.

In the end, the passengers arrive in Paris safely, but they are traumatized by their experience. They swear never to fly low-cost again, but they have learned that sometimes, you have to keep your sense of humor when things go wrong. Low Cost is a hilarious, irreverent, and sharply observed comedy that pokes fun at the often frustrating experience of air travel.
