Belinda Simpson is a widow who has recently moved to a small Missouri town to start over and practice medicine. However, she quickly realizes that something sinister is happening when several of her patients fall ill with the same mysterious illness. As the disease spreads, fear and resentment begin to take hold of the townspeople who are desperately searching for someone to blame.
One local resident, Miss Hattie Clarence, believes the illness is spreading from the town's orphanage and demands that it be shut down. Belinda does not believe this theory and starts to investigate the cause of the disease. She enlists the help of the local veterinarian, Lee Owens, and together they work to prevent the disease from spreading and find a cure.
Belinda's faith is tested during this trying time as she struggles to understand God's plan for the town. Her efforts to save the sick and help the community bring her closer to the people of the town and help her rediscover her own purpose.
