Love Serenade

Romance,Comedy  Australia

Love Serenade is a 1996 Australian romantic comedy film, written and directed by Shirley Barrett, and produced by Jan Chapman. The film stars Miranda Otto as Dimity and Rebecca Frith as Vicki-Ann, two sisters who live together in the small town of Sunray, where they work mundane jobs and lead dull lives with no prospects of ever leaving. Their only source of entertainment is the local radio station, run by Ken Sherry (George Shevtsov), a middle-aged, cynical DJ who becomes the object of their desires.

Dimity, the younger and shyer sister, becomes infatuated with Ken after he moves into the flat next door to hers. She is drawn to his sarcastic humour and deadpan delivery, even though he shows no interest in her. Vicki-Ann, the older and more outgoing sister, also becomes smitten with Ken, imagining a romantic future for them based on his arrival in town. She flirts shamelessly with him at every opportunity, leading him on to believe that she is available.

Ken takes advantage of their attention and sleeps with both sisters, leading them to believe that he is their boyfriend and fiancé, respectively. Dimity is more hesitant and unsure of the situation, while Vicki-Ann is thrilled to have landed such a catch. As they compete for Ken's affections, jealousy and suspicion arise between the sisters, and they begin to suspect that there is more to Ken than meets the eye.

The film is set in a quirky, idiosyncratic town where bizarre characters inhabit every corner, and the humour is often dark and absurd. Love Serenade won the Caméra d'Or at the 1996 Cannes Film Festival and was well-received by critics for its offbeat and unpredictable storytelling. It is a unique and charming film that explores the themes of love, desire, and identity in a refreshingly original way.
