Deathly Desires: The Final Fling

Drama  Germany

The German film Love in Thoughts (Im Juli), directed by Achim von Borries, is a portrait of youthful hedonism that takes place in the early 20th century. It tells the story of three friends living in Weimar Germany who are grappling with the onset of the First World War, their own artistic ambitions, and a changing social landscape that is leaving them behind.

The central character is Guenther (August Diehl), an unremarkable young man who is nevertheless the focus of his friends' attentions. He is adored by his sister Elli (Anna Maria Mühe), who is herself in love with his best friend Paul (Daniel Brühl), a charismatic and reckless figure who dominates the film's action.

Over the course of a long weekend in a lake house, the trio engage in a wild and frenzied orgy of sex, drugs, and alcohol. They are joined by a string of other young people who are looking for an escape from the pressures of war and society's expectations. The atmosphere is charged with eroticism and danger, as the characters push themselves to the limits of their physical and emotional capacities.

As the weekend wears on, Guenther becomes increasingly unstable and disconnected from his friends. He is haunted by nightmares and visions of death, and his behaviour grows more erratic and violent. The film builds to a climactic scene of tragedy, in which the characters' wild abandon is finally brought to a brutal end.

Love in Thoughts is a provocative and visceral exploration of youthful desire and rebellion, and the ways in which they can spiral out of control. It is a portrait of a time and a place, but also of a timeless aspect of the human experience that is both thrilling and dangerous.
