Love and Other Disasters follows the life of Emily "Jacks" Jackson, a flighty young woman who works at the British edition of Vogue magazine. Jacks is a commitment-phobe and regularly hooks up with her devoted ex-boyfriend James Wildstone. She also lives with Peter Simon, a gay screenwriter who is her best friend.
One day, Jacks meets Paolo Sarmiento, an Argentinian photographer's assistant, who she assumes is gay. Jacks tries to set Paolo up with Peter, not realizing that Paolo is straight and immediately attracted to Jacks. However, Paolo decides to go along with Jacks' assumption that he is gay in order to spend more time with her.
As Jacks and Paolo spend more time together, Jacks begins to develop feelings for Paolo, but is confused when he doesn't show any romantic interest towards her. Meanwhile, James attempts to rekindle his relationship with Jacks, but she is hesitant to commit to him again.
As the film progresses, Jacks begins to realize her true feelings for Paolo and the two finally confess their love for each other. However, Paolo must leave London to take care of his sick mother in Argentina, leaving Jacks heartbroken.
In the end, Jacks learns to open herself up to love and commitment, while also realizing the importance of true friendship and honesty.
