In the documentary, Louis Theroux returns to the Westboro Baptist Church, notorious for their extreme and controversial messages of hate towards homosexuals, Jews and soldiers. Louis had previously visited the Church in 2006 and had been met with aggression and hostility.

But in the wake of the death of the Church's founder and leader, Fred Phelps, Louis returns to try and understand how the group is coping with his passing. He speaks to members of the Church, including Phelps' daughter, Shirley Phelps-Roper, to try and get an insight into their beliefs and motivations.

Throughout the documentary, Louis also speaks to former members of the Church who have left and renounced their beliefs. They provide a unique perspective on the group's inner workings and highlight the impact that the Church has had on their lives.

As always, Louis takes a non-judgemental approach to his subject-matter, allowing the Church and its former members to speak for themselves and explore the complexities of their beliefs. The documentary offers a fascinating look at a highly controversial group and the effect that a change in leadership can have on an organisation.
