The film Lost Command is based on a novel by Jean Larteguy. The story unfolds in the aftermath of the First Indochina War, where the French military is dealing with the aftermath of defeat and withdrawal from Vietnam. The central character, Lt. Col. Pierre Raspeguy, is a war hero who had been imprisoned by the Vietnamese for several years. He is then called upon by the French military to go to Algeria to suppress a rebellion that has broken out against French colonial occupation.
Arriving in Algeria, Raspeguy is assigned to a unit of soldiers that are undisciplined and demoralized after years of fighting in the harsh terrain against nationalist rebels.
