The main character, Paul Tannek, is a straight-laced, naive college student from the Midwest who has just started his studies at a prestigious university in New York City on a scholarship. He meets his three roommates, who turn out to be bullies and make his life miserable. They constantly play pranks on him, destroy his belongings, and embarrass him in public.

Despite his difficult living situation, Paul remains optimistic and soon befriends a quirky and intelligent girl named Dora. Dora is virtually homeless, hopping from one friend's couch to another, and living off ramen noodles. Despite her tough circumstances, Dora is independent and streetwise. She takes Paul under her wing, showing him the ropes of living in the city and helping him become more assertive.

As Paul and Dora's friendship deepens, Paul realizes that he has developed feelings for her. However, his hopes are dashed when he learns that she is dating their sociology professor, a manipulative and abusive man who preys on vulnerable college students.

When one of Paul's roommates threatens to destroy his prized possession, a vintage guitar, Paul takes matters into his own hands, standing up to his bullies and earning the respect of his peers. Meanwhile, Dora comes to the realization that she deserves better than her abusive boyfriend and finally breaks things off with him.

In the end, Paul and Dora confess their feelings for each other, and they share a romantic night in the city. The film ends on a hopeful note, as Paul learns to navigate the ups and downs of love and independence, and Dora starts to build a more stable life for herself.
