Long Shot follows the story of Fred Flarsky (played by Seth Rogen), a journalist who is passionate about his work and often gets himself into trouble due to his outspoken nature. After quitting his job at a newspaper because of its questionable ownership, Flarsky is invited to a swanky charity event by his best friend Lance (played by O'Shea Jackson Jr.) where he unexpectedly runs into his former babysitter, Charlotte Field (played by Charlize Theron) who he has not seen in over two decades. Charlotte is now one of the most influential and powerful people in the world as she's the U.S. Secretary of State.
As it turns out, Charlotte is also a fan of Fred's writing and they hit it off after catching up on old times and reminiscing about their past. However, things take a different turn when Charlotte decides to run for the presidency and she offers Fred the job of being her speechwriter. Fred is hesitant at first, but he eventually agrees to take on the challenge even though it means having to work for a woman who he thought was out of his league.
Despite Fred's initial skepticism, he proves to be a valuable asset to Charlotte's team, bringing a fresh perspective and sense of humor to her speeches. As they spend more time together, the two begin to develop feelings for one another, leading to a romantic relationship that is threatened by the pressures of Charlotte's political career and her advisors who disapprove of their relationship.
In the end, Long Shot is a hilarious and heartwarming movie that explores themes of love, politics, and media, showcasing the importance of staying true to oneself and following your heart.
