As Barny continues to work closely with Sabine, she becomes increasingly infatuated with him but resists her feelings due to her new religious beliefs. However, as the Nazi occupation becomes increasingly oppressive, Barny begins to question her religious conversion and the morality of remaining passive in the face of persecution.
Meanwhile, Léon Morin becomes a target of the Nazis due to his outspoken opposition to their regime and the fact that he shelters Jewish refugees in his church. When Léon is arrested and imprisoned, Barny becomes emboldened to take action against the Nazi occupation, risking both her own safety and that of her daughter.
As the war draws to a close, Barny must navigate her conflicting loyalties and desires, ultimately realizing that both Sabine and Léon represent different aspects of the same struggle for freedom and dignity in the face of tyranny and oppression. In a climactic scene, Barny confronts her feelings for Léon and comes to a profound understanding of the meaning of sacrifice and redemption.
