Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels is a British crime-comedy film directed by Guy Ritchie and released in 1998. The film's main character is a young man named Eddie, who is played by Nick Moran. Eddie is a sharp card player who loses half a million pounds in a high-stakes poker game.
With the help of his three friends, Tom, Soap and Bacon, Eddie devises a plan to steal the money from a group of criminals who live in the apartment next door. The gangsters include a menacing drug dealer named Harry, his associate Barry, and a pair of hired killers called Gary and Dean.
The four friends hatch a convoluted scheme involving stolen shotguns, a traffic jam, a shifty fence named Nick the Greek, and a double-cross involving stolen antique shotguns. Meanwhile, other players become involved in the game including an underground gambling lord named Hatchet Harry who runs a “percent house” and also a violent thief named Big Chris who is hired by Harry to collect the money from the heist.
The plot twists and turns, with Eddie and his friends constantly underestimating their opponents, narrowly avoiding traps and getting outmaneuvered at every turn. The film is noted for its use of fast-paced editing, nonlinear storytelling, and its reliance on British humour. It became a critical and commercial success, launching Guy Ritchie’s career and inspiring a number of imitations.
