Dr. Dempsey is a renowned scientist who has gained a reputation for debunking myths and legends. When his employer sends him to Scotland to investigate the existence of the Loch Ness monster, he reluctantly agrees, believing that the whole thing is a hoax.
Upon arriving in Scotland, Dempsey meets his local assistant, a young Scottish man named Hector MacLean. The two men do not hit it off, with Dempsey dismissing Hector as a superstitious local who believes in fairy tales.
Dempsey also meets Laura, the independent inn-keeper who runs the hotel where he is staying. Despite their initial differences, the two begin to form a connection, and Dempsey finds himself attracted to Laura's strength and independence.
As Dempsey delves deeper into the mystery of the Loch Ness monster, he finds himself facing some unexpected challenges. The locals are fiercely protective of the legend and are not interested in having their beliefs challenged. Dempsey also discovers that the Nessie legend is the only thing bringing tourists to the area, and that the locals are not eager to see it debunked.
Despite these challenges, Dempsey and Hector begin to see evidence that suggests that something unusual is indeed living in the Loch. They eventually come face to face with a small family of Nessie-like creatures, and Dempsey must decide whether to go public with his discovery or to keep it a secret.
In the end, Dempsey chooses to keep the discovery secret, in part because he doesn't want to ruin the tourism industry that supports the local economy. He also decides to stay in Scotland, drawn by his growing feelings for Laura and her young son.
