After Little Voice's father passes away, she retreats into herself and spends most of her time listening to his extensive collection of records. Her mother, Mari, is an extremely loud and boisterous woman who is constantly seeking attention and companionship. Mari has a string of boyfriends, one of whom is a sleazy talent agent named Ray. Ray overhears Little Voice singing in her room one night and convinces her to perform at the local nightclub, promising to make her a star.
Little Voice reluctantly agrees to perform and, on the night of her debut, she sings a number of songs made famous by the great female singers of the past. Her rendition of these songs is so stunningly accurate that the audience is blown away. Ray sees dollar signs and starts booking her for gigs all over town. However, Little Voice is reluctant to continue, as she does not feel comfortable performing in front of others.
Meanwhile, Mari is having problems of her own. She is struggling to find a stable relationship and is clearly dependent on the attention of men. She also has a drinking problem, which results in her being hospitalized after a night of binge drinking. Mari's problems come to a head one night when she and Ray have a big fight, and Ray storms out in a rage. Little Voice is left alone in the house, and when Mari comes home drunk, she mistakenly believes that her daughter has left with Ray. In her drunken state, Mari attempts to commit suicide, leaving Little Voice to deal with the aftermath.
Despite the difficulties she faces, Little Voice's talent continues to shine through. Eventually, she decides to perform one last time, but this time she chooses to sing in her own voice. She performs a song that she has written herself, and it is clear that she has found her own unique style and voice. The movie ends on a hopeful note, with Little Voice finally coming into her own and finding her place in the world.
