Dede (played by Jodie Foster) is a struggling single mother who raises her son Fred (played by Adam Hann-Byrd) all by herself. She soon discovers that her son is a child prodigy with a superior intellect that allows him to solve complex mathematical problems and understand advanced concepts that even adults struggle with.
Dede is determined to provide Fred with the best education possible and enrolls him in a school for gifted children. However, Fred feels isolated and lonely among his intellectually superior peers and struggles to fit in. Dede has to deal with the challenge of balancing her desires for her son's future with his emotional needs as a child.
As Fred's abilities catch the attention of a prestigious university professor, Dede must confront the difficult choice of whether to let her son pursue his dreams or keep him grounded in reality, safeguarding his emotional well-being.
Throughout the movie, Dede learns to appreciate the different strengths that her son has outside of his intelligence, such as his kindness and emotional intelligence. By the end of the film, Dede comes to terms with Fred's talent, accepting that the path that Fred chooses is his own to make, not hers.
