Deanna (played by Melissa McCarthy) is a devoted wife and mother who has put her dreams on hold in order to support her husband's career. However, when her husband unexpectedly tells her he wants a divorce and that he's been having an affair, Deanna is left reeling.
Determined not to let the situation get the best of her, Deanna decides to go back to college and finish her degree. She enrolls at the same school as her daughter Maddie (played by Molly Gordon) and quickly finds herself immersed in the college experience.
Deanna embraces the freedom and opportunity her new life provides, making new friends, partying with frat boys, and even joining her daughter's sorority. Along the way, she discovers new passions and talents, like stand-up comedy, and learns to forgive herself for the mistakes of the past.
