The movie Life as a House tells the story of George Monroe, a middle-aged man who is diagnosed with terminal cancer. After years of neglecting his family and career, he decides to rebuild his relationship with his teenage son, Sam. However, Sam has become a difficult and rebellious teenager who spends most of his time getting high, engaging in small-time prostitution, and avoiding his father.
George decides to put his remaining time and energy into building a new home on the California coast, a dream that he has had for many years. He enlists the help of his estranged ex-wife, Robin, and her new husband, Peter, to convince Sam to spend the summer with him, helping to build the house.
As the three of them work together to build the house, they begin to heal their broken relationships and learn to appreciate each other. Sam comes to understand the importance of family and love, while George and Robin find closure to their past issues.
Throughout the movie, we see the ups and downs of their relationship as they struggle to rebuild their family and come to terms with George's impending death. In the end, the house becomes a symbol of their love and a testament to the power of family, even in the face of death.
