Streets of Change: Baltimore's Unforgotten Tales

Drama  United States of America

Liberty Heights is a film directed by Barry Levinson that revolves around the lives of two Jewish brothers, Ben and Van Kurtzman, and their experiences growing up in Baltimore during the 1950s. The film's plot centers around themes of anti-Semitism and racial tension, as the Kurtzmans navigate their way through a predominantly white Christian society.

Ben and Van attend a newly integrated high school where they befriend African American classmates. They witness firsthand the effects of racism and segregation in their community, including the segregation of their favorite music venues. The brothers also develop romantic relationships with girls from different backgrounds, further highlighting the racial divide in Baltimore.

Meanwhile, their father, Nate, is a struggling businessman trying to operate his burlesque theater in the midst of civil rights protests and economic uncertainty. Nate's interactions with an African American employee demonstrate the complexities of race and class dynamics during this time period.

As the boys navigate their coming of age, they are forced to confront the prejudices and preconceptions of their upbringing. The film ultimately depicts the power of personal relationships to transcend societal divisions and the importance of individual efforts to stand up against discrimination.
